First released in 2005, Bernheim is regarded as being the first whiskey to use winter wheat as the main grain in its mashbill. A straight wheat whiskey, it is made at the namesake Bernheim Distillery in Louisville, Kentucky and aged Rickhouse Y at Heaven Hill's Bardstown facility.

As a ‘straight’ whiskey, Bernheim Original must be aged a minimum of two years in a new charred oak barrel (obviously it is actually aged a minimum of 7 years), distilled at less than 80% alc./vol. (160 proof) and contain no colouring, flavouring or blending additives.
