The world's leading brand of amaretto liqueur. Originally named Amaretto di Saronno (Amaretto of Saronno) after the Italian town of Saronno where it is still made.

Said to have been first created in 1525 by a young innkeeper who posed as a model for Bernardino Luini, an artist from the Leonardo da Vinci's school of art. Luini used her as a model for his portrait of the Madonna, which can still be viewed in the Chapel of Santa Maria delle Grazie, in Saronno. For the full story, see Disaronno, a 500-year legend.

Review and Tasting

Sampled on 20/03/2025

Appearance:

Clear, bright burnished copper with golden highlights.

Aroma:

Pungent and alluring bitter almond, marzipan and cake icing sugar.

Taste:

Lightly syrupy with marzipan, macaroon, madeira, battenberg cake, vanilla, lemon zestiness, toasted almonds and apricots.

Aftertaste:

Long toasted almond and marzipan finish, which, while sweet has a balancing faint toasty bitterness.

Overall:

The plastic square cap is far from sustainable but is pleasurable to spin off and back on. Apart from perhaps the ethics of the cap, I can't fault this consistently brilliant, richly flavoured liqueur.
