Said to have been first created in 1525 by a young widow who posed as a model for Bernardino Luini, an artist from the Leonardo da Vinci's school of art. Luini used her as a model for his portrait of the Madonna which can still be viewed in the Chapel of Santa Maria delle Grazie, in Saronno.
Legend, and the DiSaronno marketing department, has it that the model presented the artist with a bottle of her home made liqueur, now known as amaretto. Commercial production was started in the 18th century by the Reina family at their apothecary shop in the main square of Saronno. There are many brands of amaretto, but DiSaronno claims to be the original and is the biggest selling with more than 70% of the worldwide market.

Pungent and alluring bitter almond, marzipan and Christmas cake icing.
Lightly syrupy with marzipan, macaroon, madeira, battenberg cake, vanilla, lemon zestyness, toasted almonds and apricots.
Long toasted almond and marzipan finish, which while sweet has a balancing faint toasty bitterness.
Notes of marzipan and Christmas cake icing make with rich liqueur reminiscent of Christmas, with madeira, battenberg cake, vanilla, lemon zestyness, toasted almonds and apricots.
