A flat, rounded, skimming stone-like shaped, knob-topped bottle proclaims its contents to be “very old”: between 12- and 17-years-old, to be exact.
The Jefferson's brand name pays homage to the third President of the United States: Thomas Jefferson, instrumental in America’s Independence in 1783 and the man credited with writing the Declaration of Independence. It seems appropriate that it was Jefferson himself who was at the heart of the Whiskey Rebellion in 1791, during which he repealed the tax on whiskey and turned Americans from rye to bourbon.

Review and Tasting

Sampled on 08/08/2014

Appearance:

(Batch No.176, bottle No. 2013 of 2400 bottles) Clear, golden amber with orange-golden flecks.

Aroma:

Beguiling nose with popcorn, vanilla, raisins and butterscotch. Fruity peachy notes and a faint whiff of ginger. A splash of water brings out even more peachy vanilla and peppery spice.

Taste:

Almost chewy, dry, hickory smoked oaky backbone on which hangs salted buttery and toffee sweet corn, vanilla, caramel and spicy fruit cake (dates, well-shrivelled raisons and mandarin orange zest).

Aftertaste:

Buttery popcorn, cinnamon and hot ginger spice builds towards a long peppery finale.
