This digestif liqueur is made by macerating caraway seeds for 12 hours overnight in a pot still charged with neutral alcohol and water. Distillation starts in the morning and lasts for seven hours. The distillate is mixed with water and sugar before filtering and bottling.
Mentzendorff Kümmel originated in 1823 and was sold by JA Mentzendorff & Co, a merchant house in the Russian city of Riga. Ludwig Mentzendorff worked for the family company and early in 1850 the Baron Von Blankenhagen, who owned a nearby distillery making Kümmel, approached Ludwig to represent his Kümmel liqueur in Great Britain under the Mentzendorff name. On 1st June that same year Ludwig sailed from Hamburg to London on the SS Caledonia.
In 1851 Ludwig established Mentzendorff & Co and began selling Mentzendorff Kümmel in London. Mentzendorff Kümmel continues to be sold in the UK by the company which retains the name of its founder to this day.
Review and Tasting
Sampled on 03/04/2022
Appearance:
Crystal clear.
Aroma:
Elegant caraway, cumin liquorice, teak oil and spearmint.
Taste:
Syrupy mouthfeel is quickly taken over by powerful cumin spice, turmeric, cinnamon, aniseed and a peppery clove tingle.
Aftertaste:
Fades with lingering caraway, light clove-led spice and emerging chalkiness.
Overall:
Herbal, spicy, elegant and complex. Long one of the leading brands of Kummel for good reason.
