This Royal Lochnagar ‘Distiller’s Edition’ 12-year-old is finished in sweet muscat casks for an unspecified amount of time, but I hear “we are talking a few months rather than years”.

Review and Tasting

Sampled before 1st May 2011

Appearance:

(Distilled 1996,Bottled 2009, Batch No. RL/96-9T) Clear, golden amber with faint green tinge.

Aroma:

Green apple skin and baked apple pie with newbuck leather a punt of fresh strawberries.

Taste:

Velvety honeyed palate with vibrant green apple skin, subtle tobacco and kirsch-like flavours.

Aftertaste:

A faint touch of sulphur emerges on the honeyed, heather finish. An easy-drinking dram but with lots going on. Best enjoyed without the addition of water, which appears to deaden rather than awaken its delicate flavours.
