Distilled on 7th February 1969 and aged 43 years in American oak ex-bourbon hogshead casks, this is one of the oldest Balblair vintages to date. The 999 bottles released in November 2012 where, as is always the case with Balblair, non-chill filtered, naturally coloured and bottled at cask strength.

Back in 1969, when this was distilled, Balblair still operated its own on-site malting and the stills at were still direct coal-fired.

Review and Tasting

Sampled on 03/01/2013

Appearance:

Clear, mid golden amber.

Aroma:

Pungent candied fruit, pear drops and stewed apples with vanilla oak.

Taste:

While honeyed, this not the fruit-laden sweetie the nose might suggest. Green apple, pear and vanilla are and balanced by light smoky peat, citrus and dry nutty oak.

Aftertaste:

Pleasingly smoky finish with chargrilled pear and vanilla.
