This “Extra” bottling (with blue label and silver box) should not be confused with the original Cordon Bleu (with white label and blue box), which is confusingly also labelled “extra old”. Cordon Bleu Extra is differentiated by containing an even more generous portion of very old Borderies cognacs.
Launched exclusively at Singapore’s Changi Airport in September 2016 (and from November available at other travel retail locations around the world). When we acquired our bottle at Changi Airport we also took up the opportunity to have a monogramed stopper (scroll image to view).
This Extra bottling was created 104 years after the original Martel Cordon Bleu.
Review and Tasting
Sampled on 10/10/2016
Appearance:
Clear, deep golden amber with glints of burnished copper.
Aroma:
Candied fruit, candied orange and violet blossom with ginger bread, cinnamon, clove and toasted almond, mocha coffee.
Taste:
Intense yet elegant. Cinnamon and clove spiced fruit cake with candied orange, banana cake, candied fruit, parma violet, dry toasted brazil nuts and mocha coffee.
Aftertaste:
Long spicy fruit cake finish with cigar leaf, almond and more violet notes.
Overall:
Richer and more intense than regular Martell Cordon Bleu with wonderful floral parma violet notes. Be sure to buy a bottle of ‘Extra’ when you come across it in duty free as it represents incredible value for such an outstanding cognac.
