This most unusual rum was distilled in 1990 at the now closed Enmore distillery in Guyana using a wooden Coffey still.

Neil Mathieson (Managing Director of specialist drinks importers Eau de Vie) started laying down stocks of rum in the 1990, continually adding “suitable bulk fillings” over the years. The result is the Mezan Barrique XO and Mezan Single Cask rum range, all bottled without filtration, colouring or sweetening. Bottled under contract, these are released once or twice a year depending on sales and Neil’s stated ethos is to continue this, “offering completely natural rums with no further cask influence, through wood or wine finishing.”

Review and Tasting

Sampled on 17/09/2011

Appearance:

Clear, pale golden.

Aroma:

Lightly spicy, creamy butterscotch and dried tropical fruit nose with spicy oak and the merest whiff of mint and eucalyptus oil.

Taste:

Medium-bodied fruity palate with a dry oakyness and pronounced salty smokiness resembling an Islay malt.

Aftertaste:

Long, dry, salty and slightly smoky finish is more whisky-like than you’d expect of any rum.
