Established in 1779, Bowmore is thought to be the oldest distillery on Islay – and it still operates its own floor maltings. The waste heat from the distillery is used to heat a swimming pool, which is housed in a converted ageing warehouse. The first recorded mention of the distillery was in 1779 but it is believed to have been established by a merchant, David Simson, soon after he arrived in the town in 1766. The distillery is noted for still having an operational floor malting and peat fired malt drying kiln. Bowmore draws its water from the Laggan River, which also contributes to its peaty character.
