Yeah I think quite a lot of countries have a government liquor monopoly of some kind. Liquor sale is strictly regulated here and subject to very high duties, retailed mostly through chain stores owned the supermarket “duopoly” Coles and Woolworths. Some boutique independent retailers but I assume the coats are generally prohibitive. Aldi sell in store and are actually very competitive and sell some quite unexpected products at times - as is their wont! Eg perfectly acceptable domestic and French wines at very good prices and some pretty serviceable gin.
Yes! I think Australian wine has massively improved over the last few decades, many more growers and ever increasing focus on quality. I mostly drink white but some excellent reds as well.
