That's a great question. They both sit right at the top of the family tree, the parents of all the others. They are the very definition of what a cocktail is and don't fit any of the above categories. In his 2003 'The Joy of Mixology', Gary "gaz" Regan brackets the Manhattan in his "French-Italian: Whisky & Brandy" family. I think I'd simply call them Old Fashioneds.
