Thanks. I'm just a neophyte home hobbyist and I love this site. I go to it everyday to read the Cocktail of the Day and try something new. You do a great job explaining so much, it's my "go-to" site when I'm needing information about an ingredient or term. Keep up the great work.

Which family do classic drinks like the Old Fashioned and Manhatten fall?

the two drinks are in the old "cocktail" family. If you check the first drink mix books you will find their original names. Whiskey cocktail and Manhattan cocktail. old fashioned is a service modality, it refers to that it must be prepared according to its original recipe and not with modern versions.

That's a great question. They both sit right at the top of the family tree, the parents of all the others. They are the very definition of what a cocktail is and don't fit any of the above categories. In his 2003 'The Joy of Mixology', Gary "gaz" Regan brackets the Manhattan in his "French-Italian: Whisky & Brandy" family. I think I'd simply call them Old Fashioneds.
