The Vikings mined iron ore in the area and in 1580 the local supply of iron led King Karl IX of Sweden to establish the Åkers Cannon Foundry there. Soon after, a distillery was established on the site to supply vodka to the foundry workers and people in the surrounding area.

The distillery is certified according to EU and the US National Organic Program (USDA NOP). Sweden’s only certified organic distillery also uses electricity generated by water and wind power. Water is drawn from the distillery’s own well and a natural strain of yeast is used in fermentation.
