Pronounced ‘Tom-a- tin to rhyme with satin, in Gaelic, Tomatin translates as ‘Hill of the Juniper bush’. The distillery, which incidentally was Scotland’s largest in 1974 but has since had stills removed to reduce capacity, retains its own working cooperage. Known for producing unpeated malts, since 2004 a peated spirit at 12ppm has been produced during the last week of each month. For many years Tomatin was sold exclusively as a malt to be used in other blends but since being acquired by Japanese owners in 1986, Tomatin has been marketed as a single malt whisky in its own right. Tomatin is closely associated with and used in The Antiquary blend which is also owned by the distillery’s owners.
