Following a lead from Wondrich in The Oxford Companion I managed to track down the "Disturbing Sunday Drinks" column in the New Haven Register on July 27th, 1885! "Joe McKone, who invented the Adonis cocktail..." - the head bartender at the Hoffman House at the time!
