An English physician, Dr Frobridge, who was visiting the small Czech spa town of Karlovy Vary as the personal physician to Count Zu Pletenberg-Mietingen, originally produced Becherovka as a stomach 'medicine' in 1805.
Demand led to factory production, which started in 1807 at Karlovy-Vary, west of Prague (which, under the Austrians, was Karlsbad - hence the drink's alternative name, Carlsbad Becher). Now the Czech national liqueur, Becherovka is matured in oak and contains cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg and other herbs.

Clear, pale golden amber.
complex, herbal and spicy - particularly cinnamon and cloves.
Lightly silky and honeyed with a changing range of sweetness and bitterness, with rootiness, cloves, baked apples, hint of cough medicine, dried mint and humbugs.
Long herbal spicy finish with lingering rooty bitterness and clove.
Sipped neat Becherovka is a settling digestif but it is mostly enjoyed mixed with tonic water. However, it is a fantastic cocktail ingredient, particularly in beer cocktails. Bartenders - perhaps view this as strong Czech falernum.
