These famous German bitters, sold in brown paper wrapped miniature bottles, were first produced in 1846 by Herbert Underberg. Herbs and roots are hot macerated with distilled water and neutral alcohol before being aged in oak casks.

The bottle's label proclaims 'after a good meal' - a reference to its digestive properties. The wife of Underberg's chairman, Emil Underberg, was the model and inspiration for the lady in white who appears on the packaging.
