This exceptional rum was blended by eight former Bacardi Master Blenders, all descendants of Don Facundo Bacardí Massó, from the most exceptional casks produced by Bacardi’s Mexican and Puerto Rican production over the last two decades. It was married in 60 year old Cognac casks.

Ron Bacardi de Maestros de Ron Vintage MMXII is presented in an individually finished and numbered hand-blown crystal decanter. Only 997 decanters were produced and of these 600 went to members of the Bacardi family to celebrate 150 since their ancestor launched Bacardi rum and 397 were made available to the public with a price tag around US$2,000.

Palm detailing throughout the decanter and leather presentation case remembers El Coco, a coconut palm planted in 1862 by Facundo Bacardí Moreau (son of Bacardi’s founder) outside the first distillery in Santiago de Cuba. As prophesised, that tree started to wither and finally died in 1960 when Castro's administration confiscated all of the Bacardi Company's assets and the family were exiled from Cuba. El Coco symbolised the company's strength and coconut palms now grow outside Bacardi’s offices and distilleries around the world.

Palm leaf detailing laser engraved on the decanter neck and walnut stopper symbolise the new coconut palm that will take Bacardi into the future, while the sphere of liquid within the decanter represents the seed of “El Coco” for the next generation. The decanter’s surface also denotes the split in the coconut from where the new palm will grow.

Alongside the hand pressed red crystal bat device on the decanter the coordinates of the first Bacardi distillery in Santiago de Cuba is engraved. The decanter also features a map of the Caribbean pointing to the original home of El Coco and the Bacardí family. The base of the presentation case doubles as an elevated display stand.

Review and Tasting

Sampled on 31/05/2013

Appearance:

Clear, deep coppery amber with bronze tints.

Aroma:

Toasted maple wood, burnt sugar, espresso coffee, dark chocolate and caramelised banana with burnt raisons, mandarin zest, vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg spice. Reminiscent of coffee cake and British Christmas pudding dusted with cinnamon and nutmeg.

Taste:

Full-bodied and luxurious with enlivening spice. Honey sweet dried tropical fruit and raisons, crème caramel, dark chocolate and freshly ground coffee beans with slightly smoky sandalwood, dried pineapple and prunes.

Aftertaste:

Bitter chocolate, cracked coffee beans, dried pineapple and prunes with lingering elegant cinnamon and nutmeg spice.
