Saphire is a former greengrocer’s shop, now unrecognisable in its new guise as a very slick neighbourhood bar boasting sleek modern design, brushed stainless steel and white, curvy, low-slung cream banquettes.
The immense cocktail menu includes all the big name classics as well as house specials such as the Züchtigungsphantasien, the most popular drink here, which I am reliably informed translates literally as ‘disciplinarian fantasies’. This is best described as a berry fruit mojito cum smoothie: it’s all in the name I suppose.
Regular readers will be relieved to hear that classics, including the daiquiri, are reliably well executed. The spirits selection here is among the best in Berlin and, like the cocktails, prices vary according to the time of night, so best start early.
A bit of misspelling worked for Absolut and the dyslexic in me questions what the second ‘p’ in ‘sapphire’ is all about anyway. Saphire’s logo incorporates three stars but due to the interior design, friendly attentive service and drinks it should be at least a four star: lucky locals. Who wants to buy veg anyway?
By the way, there’s a sister branch called the The Saphire Lounge at 62 Sredzkistrasse.
