Review

"Easily the best bar in Liverpool named after a type of bird," states The Peacock's Facebook site. We can't disagree - and the sense of humour embodies the ethos of this friendly and bustling newish addition to the already busy Seel Street.

Located across the road from Alma de Cuba, a six-foot (and four-legged) peacock marks the presence of this self-professed modern boozer. It's a fair description in all senses of the word - from the cross-section (without specialization) of beers, wines and cocktails, to the relaxed and friendly ethos, and its contemporary (but by no means clinical) interior, a soundtrack from rock 'n' roll to electronica, it's a non-pretentious home-from-home that attracts a range of students and 20-somethings.

A stone pizza oven forms something of a focal point on ground-floor - and at £5 there's no reason not to get one, they're excellent - while upstairs is altogether more glitzy and with a party atmosphere and DJs. There's even a free weekly barbecue which makes use of the terrace outdoors. The cocktail menu's focused on fruit-driven cocktails though they are all original combinations and they are not afraid of the odd brown spirit either.
