Review

Secreted on a side street a few blocks away from Plaza Armenia in Palermo, Verne Cocktail Club is gorgeous, romantic, and wildly popular. Its namesake, author Jules Verne, inspires the space's general aesthetic-Golden Age jazz bar meets steampunk gentleman's club-as well as the menu, a whimsical tribute to Around the World in 80 Days, with drinks inspired by the various cities visited by Phileas Fogg. In addition, Verne offers a selection of beer and wine as well as a menu of gourmet bar snacks and hot dogs.

Co-owner Fede Cuco is something of a celebrity bartender in Buenos Aires, which doesn't stop him from taking the time to chat to customers and create excellent custom drinks on the fly. The rest of the bar team is similarly skilled, although floor service struggles to keep up with the bar's popularity. The crowd is low on tourists and high on couples on dates, interspersed with bartenders from other venues and groups of well-dressed young professionals. Standing room is limited and table turnover is slow, so reservations are a good idea. Otherwise, go early, or go prepared to wait.
