Review

Uber is the bar side of Umami, the fine dining Japanese/French fusion restaurant which lies on the floor above.

The interior, by accomplished interiors firm Orbit Design of London, is modern, bright and airy with a double-height ceiling and a mood lighting scheme that undulates between primary colours. However, the long bar is very much the main feature here and competes with the restaurant above to be the establishments main draw.

The cocktail menu is influenced by the Japanese kitchen, making use of shochu, sake and ingredients such as shiso and Calpis - a traditional Japanese soft drink. Uber offers an impressive Japanese whisky selection with ice balls carved on order for guests who like their whisky served on a spherical 'rock'.

The Ginger Passion with shochu, passionfruit juice, lime juice, ginger syrup and lychee liqueur is the bar's signature drink and by far the best seller. We liked the Little Smith (Zubrovka vodka, calvados, falernum, pressed apple juice and a wasabi leaf) but found all of the cocktails we sampled to be balanced and well-conceived.
