A popular apothecary-inspired cocktail bar in Chinatown, the Keefer specialises in original 'prescriptions' using house-made bitters, teas, syrups and infusions with herbs drawn from the world of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The dark narrow room glows with suspended lighting and is adorned with Chinese anatomical diagrams, antique glass collections and quirky treasures including an IV unit. Split in two, the back portion can be booked for private parties and larger groups, on summer nights head for the front patio with its flickering fire or hunker down at the front bar under the 'Medical Centre' sign and admire the rows of jars murky with herbs and sizeable collection of Japanese, Scotch and American whiskies.
The list of 'seasonal prescriptions' changes every few months and week night deals and the daily-changing Fountain Cocktail specials make the Keefer a sound financial choice for drinkers on a budget. It's a high-energy room with the drinks coming fast -but carefully made- attracting a crowd of locals and out of town fans. The tiny stage at the front of the bar hosts weekly DJs, live music and a long-running Burlesque night. The Asian-themed tapas menu offers especially good Peking Duck sliders.
