Brass Monkey was established in 1999 and continues to draw in the crowds - everyone from geeky bartenders wanting properly stirred drinks from the 1930s to impressionable cocktail 'newbies' who still appreciate glow-sticks in their drinks. In case you think the presence of fluorescent garnishes suggests that the quality of your drink might be questionable, rest assured, they are big on standards here whatever you order - a quick chat with the bartenders reveals they are sniffy about other venues that don't refrigerate their vermouths. Just the type of fact we like to hear!
The long, thin space is divided between a bar area that's basically about vertical drinking, and a lounge area that's up a step at the back. A modern, minimalistic interior has the bar's monkey logo emblazoned everywhere you look. The menu is a mix of bartender's favourites, classics and house creations, each with either a historical footnote, an explanation of how it is made, or an appealing description of its flavour.
A good atmosphere, and an even better balance between being a fun place to be but where they stay serious about their drinks.
