Bottled in 2011, this 35-year-old malt was distilled in 1976 and has since been maturing in three first fill American white oak ex-bourbon hogsheads. Only 500 bottles are available worldwide.
Named after a peat bog local to the industry, Feith a' Chaorainn, literally 'bog of the rowan' which lies on the west coast of Jura. Incidentally, many islanders apparently believe the rowan tree can bring good luck and sprigs of rowan are placed over doorways to ward off lightening, carried on boats to protect against storms and are fixed to cattle sheds to help ensure the wellbeing of the livestock.
Sampled on 02/10/2011
Clear, deep-golden amber with polished golden highlights.
Buttery, honeyed and spicy nose with aromas of lavender, liquorice, Christmas cake, old leather and faint menthol.
Salty, very lightly smoked palate with sage, liquorice, lemon zest and buttery oak.
Long malty finish with lingering delicately smoked sea-saltiness.
