Named after the man credited with inventing the charring process, the Baptist minister Elijah Craig. Little is known for sure about this semi-legendary figure who, along with 177 of his neighbours, was found guilty of distilling without a license on 26th September 1798. The reverend was fined $140.
Elijah Craig is made with a mashbill of 78% corn, 10% rye and 12% malted barley.
Elijah Craig was first launched as a 12-year-old whiskey in 1986, but in January 2016, due to pressure on limited stocks, Heaven Hill, the brand's owners, announced that the age statement was being dropped from the label and Elijah Craig Small Batch Bourbon and is now be aged for eight to 12 years.
