This Czech lager is brewed using a double decoction mash (an intensive approach that gives the beer a fuller body) and three stages of hopping in copper kettles, Hobo is fermented in open fermentation 'squares' for 14 days before being transferred into horizontal lagering tanks for two months.
Named after the term for a wandering gentleman, Hobo is brewed using Moravian two-row spring malted barley and three varieties of Czech hops: Saaz, Sladek and Premiant. The water is drawn from 15 metres below the brewery cellars and the brewery propagates its own yeast.
Sampled on 09/05/2016
(sample can best before 14/Sep/16) Clear, yellow gold with quickly fading white head and light lacing.
Subdued, brioche malt with dried and caramelised apple.
Clean, crisp light-medium bodied with a slight dry cider-like note and grassy mildly pine-ey hops. Pleasing, almost creamy mouthfeel and moderate carbonation.
Lingering maltiness with mildly bitter spruce needle hops.
This lager’s white can packaging is reminiscent of something Ikea might sell, but it's practical and fridge friendly. Inside is a well-brewed, characterful pilsner with an attractive creamy mouthfeel.
