Until recent years it was illegal to produce Mauritian aged rum due to deal struck with the European Union. Despite this some spirit was put into cask and stashed away. This ‘Island Solera’ is a blend of some of this 25 year old Mauritian rum blended with 8 year old. Only 2,000 bottles were produced

Review and Tasting

Sampled on 21/10/2012

Appearance:

(bottle no.1 of 2,000) Clear, dark coppery amber.

Aroma:

Pungent passion fruit, old leather and toffee apple with note of plastic box and vanilla (in an appealing way).

Taste:

Full bodied. Sweet tropical fruit and vanilla mount a spirited defence against dry oaky tannins. Proof that good things can come out of opposition.

Aftertaste:

Like the palate, dry tannins balance vanilla and sweet tropical fruit. However, tannins win out. A properly rare, highly collectable rum which is also exceptional. One to buy if you can afford it.
