In 2009, Leslie Rudd, 209’s founder, challenged Arne Hillesland, 209’s Master Distiller, to produce what remains the world’s only certified kosher-for-Passover gin.

The goal was to develop a gin as close to No. 209 Gin’s taste profile as possible. However, several of 209’s key botanicals, primarily cardamom, are not Passover approved. Arnie stayed true to 209’s citrus and spice profile but with a more herbal menthol undertone due to the use of California bay leaf from Mt. Veeder in Napa Valley. Kosher dietary law prohibits leavened grains preventing the use of a grain spirit so South African distilled Kosher sugar cane spirit is used as the base. Production is supervised by a Rabbi from the Orthodox Union to confirm to the strict Kosher dietary laws.
