Bottled from American oak hogsheads and refill European oak butts, this is the 11th limited release of unpeated Caol Ila. A maximum of 2,984 individually numbered bottles were released as part of Diageo’s 2016 Special Releases. Bottled at cask strength without chill-filtration or added colour.
Sampled on 10/10/2016
Clear, golden amber.
Baked apple, leather, toasty popcorn, donuts frying and Rooibos tea. Water amplifies spice revealing a maritime saltiness.
Powerful peppery spirit spice, leather, nutmeg, malt and menthol. With water (it needs it) this Caol Ila is still spicy with warming pepper, baked apple pie and sweet barley wine.
Long spicy barley finish with ginger and light black pepper.
This 15 year old Caol Ila packs a spicy punch – it’s bottled at 61.5%, something to take into account when considering the price as the water you’ll need to add stretches this malt to make it good value for money. Your hard earned cash will buy you a Caol Ila with “limited edition” (quantity not revealed) bragging rights and a characterful malt with baked apple, peppery spice, leather and Rooibos tea.
