Sean Muldoon and Jack McGarry, founders of award-winning bar The Dead Rabbit Grocery and Grog, alongside esteemed bar manager Jillian Vose, present their second cocktail book and it's no less impressive than their first.
Mixology and Mayhem goes above and beyond cocktail recipes. The book brings together 90 Dead Rabbit cocktails from their six-part menu with great cocktails and recipes for their house-made ingredients, but also reads as a graphic novel.
The Rabbit protagonist of Mixology and Mayhem, enthralled by 19th century Irish mob boss John Morrissey, goes on a wild ride through a dark and dangerous 1970s New York City. Fuelled by vengeance, retribution, and all other (great) violent gears of comic books, the Rabbit crosses paths with characters drawn from real drinks industry individuals, including our very own Simon Difford.
The mise en place introduction covers the shaping of their menus, including the development of the graphic novel. We go backstage with Jillian and discover her involvement in menu and drinks creation. A chapter offers cocktail making tips, then another (for bartenders pehaps the most interesting) with instructions to make the tinctures and syrups used in the cocktails. And to top it off, we find beautiful photography of the cocktails and the bar team interspersed throughout the book.
