Review

Bistrotheque has undergone a major facelift since we were last here. Located on a side street between Bethnal Green and Hackney, it's one that you really have to know is there otherwise you'll easily dismiss it as a factory.

What was the bar downstairs is now a private dining room, whilst upstairs is now home to both the bar and restaurant. Inside it's all very spartan, fitting into the warehouse setting with crisp white walls, tables and exposed lights. Those in for just a drink can sit along the large island bar overlooking the diners.

The menu is divided between aperitifs and 'pudding' drinks, accompanied by an extensive wine and champagne list. We stuck to some classic aperitifs, trying a Pisco Sour and a Negroni. Both cocktails were quickly delivered and well-presented although the Negroni was very vermouth-heavy and, while our servers were cordial and efficient, they lacked warmth and hospitality. All in all the bar is still decent and the food is great here, but it feels a little less special being upstairs amongst the diners. That said the atmosphere is certainly improved thanks to added background chatter - downstairs seemed a bit lonely sometimes. 3.5/5
