This small wine bar in Fortnum & Mason, named after the year when the famous department store was founded, was designed by David Collins, and boasts rustic wooden walls, mosaic floors, filament light bulbs and a glossy, black marble island bar. Its position adjacent to the wine department is more than serendipitous - 1707 boosts an otherwise restrained wine list by offering a flat corkage fee of just £10 for anything you'd care to buy and consume on the premises, regardless of its price.
There is a range of cocktails offered - under sensible headings such as 'New World', 'Modern Classics', and Jerry Thomas-referenced 'Fancy Drinks', each listed with helpful explanations of history and heritage, but you've really come here for the wine. Wine flights in particular are a real draw, with innovative serves across grape varieties and countries and sometimes also mixing red and white wines, and starting at just £12.50. Live music most days of the week makes this feel like a special little oasis of sophistication in this most sophisticated of shops.
