Trovador Inspirado is a blend of three different rums: a Cuban-style rum distilled from molasses fermented with a special yeast strain, a Dominican rum that's also molasses-based but with more age, and a Mexican pot-still rum distilled from fermented fresh cane juice.

Trovador Rum was created by Chad Newton, who, along with his wife Gracie Nguyen, owns You Are Here Hospitality, known for operating the East Side Bánh Mì in Nashville. The couple are fans of Raul Malo and The Mavericks, the band he is the frontman of, and listening to Raul's album Say Less, Chad decided the music, much of it inspired by the Caribbean, is "like the soundtrack of rum."

Malo is a regular customer of East Side Bánh Mì; thus, the foundations of this collaborative rum brand were established. The rum takes its name from the Spanish for "troubadour," a term the singer, who has Cuban American heritage, identifies with.

Newton approached Devon Trevathan and Colton Weinstein of Liba Spirits, experienced in creating and launching spirits. Nashville bartender, Beau Gaultier, was also recruited to the team for his cocktail skills.

The rum was blended and bottled in Nashville for initial distribution locally via Lipman Brothers.
