Bundaberg produce some 65,000 cases a year, mostly for the domestic market, making it the most popular rum brand in Australia. Sugar production is the main industry in Queensland, producing 40 gallons of molasses for every ton of sugar. Bundaberg has been produced from these molasses since 1889.
Affectionately known to its devotees as ‘Bundy’, in the 1960s Bundaberg’s famous square bottle and its yellow label depicting a polar bear were introduced. The bear stems from the days when it was believed rum had medicinal properties and that Bundy could ward off the worst type of chill - hence an Arctic animal seemed appropriate.
