This represents two firsts for Glenfiddich as 'Age Of Discovery' is the brand's first 19-year-old release and also the first finished in ex-Madeira wine casks. The Portuguese influence stretches to the name, inspired by 15th Century Portuguese explorers who discovered Porto Santo and Madeira.
To quote the brand's own description of packaging: "The black glass bottle is embellished with a red cartouche compass and encased in an outer display box, adorned with creative illustrations, mapping out the travels of Portuguese explorers."
Sampled on 07/10/2012
Clear, mid golden with bright gold highlights.
Ripe caramelised fruit, fresh slightly tart gooseberries and orange marmalade with lanolin, earthy old leather and clove and nutmeg spice.
Nubuck leather and white orchard fruits, cracked black pepper, cinnamon and ginger spice lead with faint marmalade and rounding dried fruit.
Pepper and dry charcoal flavours linger with burnt raisin fruit, nutty madeira, dry oak and light spice.
