The House of Moët & Chandon was founded by Claude Moët in 1742, but it was his grandson, Jean-Rémy Moët who is credited for establishing the real foundations to what would become the world's largest champagne house with Brut Imperial the world's best-selling champagne.

The name 'Brut Imperial' commemorates the friendship between Napoleon Bonaparte and Jean-Rémy Moët. The two went to the same military academy and remained friends with Napoleon decorating Jean-Rémy with the Légion d'honneur. Brut Imperial is a blend of 50 per cent Pinot Noir, 40 per cent Meunier and 10 per cent Chardonnay.

This famous Champagne brand is commonly mispronounced 'Mow-Ay' in an ill-informed attempt to give the name a French accent. The correct pronunciation is 'Mow-ett ay Shon-don' as the name has Dutch origins.

Appearance:

Clear, pale golden with good persistence.

Aroma:

Subdued, lightly toasty with zesty lemon and faint salty lime cordial.

Taste:

Moët has been described as "fatty, cardboardy and lacking character". Harsh words but considering the huge volumes Moët produces, it is not half bad with pleasant biscuityness and hints of fresh lemon zest. However, special it is not.

Aftertaste:

Lingering citrus acidity.
