Danziger Goldwasser (literally 'gold water of Gdansk' in German) claims origins dating back to 1598 and the city of Gdansk where this liqueur is said to have been a favourite of Tsar Peter and Catherine The Great.
Flavoured with roots and herbs its 'golden' name references the flakes of 22-carat gold leaf which dance in suspension in the liquid when the bottle is shaken.
Review and Tasting
Sampled on 01/04/2011
Appearance:
Crystal clear with flakes of gold leaf.
Aroma:
Aniseed, juniper and cinnamon nose with fresh cut grass and menthol aromas.
Taste:
Liquorice, aniseed and cinnamon, which, while slightly sweet and syrupy, is far from cloying due to the balance of alcohol and hot cinnamon.
Aftertaste:
Prickly peppery, warm cinnamon finish.
