Strucchi Bitter Liqueur

Difford's Guide

Vintage: Non-vintage

Aged: No age statement

Product of: Product of Italy Italy

This Italian red bitter liqueur's striking label was created by Piedmontes contemporary artist Riccardo Guasco, who linked each of the four Stucchi products to a famous historical character, in this case, Rodolfo Valentino.

The Strucchi range pays homage to Arnaldo Strucchi, author of one of the most significant and detailed manuals on Vermouth of Turin, which remains a respected reference work today.

Another nod to tradition is also evident in the Bitter, recalling Strucchi's discussion of the Americano cocktail in his 1907 book - the American drink that blended red Vermouth and bitter.

Review and Tasting

Sampled on 30/11/2023

Appearance:

Clear, crimson red.

Aroma:

Bitter orange oils, ruby red grapefruit, zesty lime, quinine, bay leaf, cherry, and herbal woodiness.

Taste:

Herbaceous quinine bitterness leads, supported by zesty citrus and acacia honey richness.

Aftertaste:

Long bitter finish with mint and cherry emerging. Lingering bitterness with zesty mandarine orange.

Overall:

Bittersweet. Not quite as bitter as Campari but very close, and more bitter than comparable products such as Martini Bitter. Strucchi perhaps boasts more structured zesty citrus notes. It is among the best Italian red bitter liqueurs we've encountered.
