First launched as the Goose Island Clybourn Brewpub by John Hall in 1999, the pubs position just one block from Chicago’s Wrigley Field Baseball Stadium and the craft beer offering quickly established Goose Island as a local brand to watch.
Marketed as being “Chicago’s craft beer”, demand for Goose Island led to the establishment of Goose Island’s Fulton Street Brewery in 1995 followed by an acquisition for US$38.8 million by beer conglomerate, Anheuser-Busch InBev in 2011.
In February 2014, A-B InBev announced a promotion of Gosse Island’s Bourbon County Stout series and the leasing of a 130,000-square-foot warehouse near the brewery to house hundreds of ex-bourbon barrels in which to age the stout for a minimum of a year.
Anheuser-Busch InBev also brews some Goose Island branded beers at other plants it owns across American, adding to calls the Goose Island brand should no longer be described as being a “craft beer”. In 2013, total production topped 350,000 barrels.
