Steinhäger is a German style of juniper berry-flavoured spirit (gin) named after the village of Steinhagen in North Rhine-Westphalia. A European Union directive enacted in 1989 protects this geographical name by prohibiting gins produced elsewhere being labelled as Steinhäger.
Steinhäger is traditionally sold in earthenware (Steingut) bottles and the glass bottles it is now also sold in are designed to resemble these.
European Union law stipulates that Steinhäger must be at least 37.5% alc./vol. but the two remaining producers both bottle at a minimum of 38% alc./vol..
