The Monin Cup is a biennial competition for professional bartenders under the age of 28. Those who triumph at their national heats are then invited to go forward to represent their country at the global finals with a chance to be crowned Global Monin Cup champion.
Returning in its 7th year, Monin Cup 2018 saw national competitions hosted across 46 countries. 'Mix Their Origins' was the central theme, challenging competitors to demonstrate their creative skills behind the bar whilst using Monin products to craft signature cocktails. The 46 national winners were then invited to represent their country in the global finals later in the year.
Monin Cup Global 2018
The finals were held in Paris on 12 December 2018 bringing some of the world’s best bartenders under 28 together to compete for the global cup.
Finalists went through three rounds whilst tested on their knowledge, understanding of the industry and importance of no or low ABV serves and ability to identify ingredients and measurements by taste.
The final round surprised competitors as they were given a mystery box containing an iconic Monin original. They were then asked to create a signature serve incorporating the ingredient.
The Global Winner
Dimi Savvaidis of The King of Islington in Dundee, UK, had successfully come out on top as the UK winner in September 2018. And after tough, gruelling rounds, Savvaidis rose to the occasion once again and created a cocktail which made a great impression on the judges. He was crowned the global champion, taking home the cup and a €5,000 prize fund. It marks the first time in the competition’s history that the UK have taken home the global win.
The President of Monin, Olivier Monin commented on the extremely high standard at this year’s competition and said: “There are few awards of this scale that recognise the global skill of young bartenders. We’re really proud that the Monin Cup acknowledges and rewards this talent and to have entries from 46 countries is amazing.”
