World Rum Day

Established in 2019 by drinks writer Paul Jackson and celebrated annually on the second Saturday of July, World Rum Day has grown in its importance thanks to support from distilleries, bars and rum enthusiasts.

Produced from sugarcane juice or, more commonly, a by-product of sugar refining called molasses, rum production reflects the traditions of countless nations where it's made, each with its own distinctive style. From the grassy freshness of Martinique's rhum agricole to the rich, full-bodied rums of Guyana, Jamaica, Barbados and beyond, no other spirit offers quite the same breadth of flavour or sense of place.

Rum's history is fascinating and complex, developing in the Caribbean during the 17th century alongside the sugar trade, and its rise was closely intertwined with colonial expansion and the transatlantic slave trade. Those shameful origins remain an important part of rum's story, while today's producers increasingly celebrate transparency, provenance and traditional production methods alongside innovation.

Rum also occupies a unique place behind the bar, as the backbone of classics such as the Daiquiri, Mojito, PiƱa Colada, Mai Tai and Planter's Punch, while aged expressions rival fine whiskies and cognacs for complexity. Bartenders continue to embrace rum's versatility, using everything from light Cuban-style rums to bold, high-ester Jamaican bottlings and characterful agricole rhums to create cocktails that range from refreshingly light and fruity to spirit-forward and expressive.

So, whether your preference is a crisp Daiquiri, a contemplative glass of well-aged rum, World Rum Day is an excellent reminder that rum is a spirit with extraordinary history, remarkable diversity and a well-earned place among the world's great distilled spirits.
