Chris, I just did the same thing. Earlier today, I couldn't find a brand of creme de menthe I wanted. Messed with some measures at home and found something palatable, using peppermint essential oil. It's passable, but something is missing... Diluting that makeshift liqueur with more vodka just made it taste like bland toothpaste water... Felt like it needed a wedge of lime, like a Ti Punch or something.

Oof, I'm sure that would've happened. I think either make your own mint liqueur, or just buy one.

I came back to this just now with Tempus Fugit Creme de Menthe and an organic rye vodka and it was more than palatable. Delightful, even.
