Delightful after-dinner or evening cocktail. A bit on the sweeter side than my liking, but still very good. Did add a slight bit more vodka which helped with the sugar balance.
I made a homemade mint liqueur comprising just mint, vodka and sugar syrup. Maybe that's why, but it tasted really bad. Alongside the Green Fizz and the Bay Breeze, it is among those as the worst cocktails I ever had.
Chris, I just did the same thing. Earlier today, I couldn't find a brand of creme de menthe I wanted. Messed with some measures at home and found something palatable, using peppermint essential oil. It's passable, but something is missing... Diluting that makeshift liqueur with more vodka just made it taste like bland toothpaste water... Felt like it needed a wedge of lime, like a Ti Punch or something.
I have found that I either love a specific mint flavoured cocktail or hate it. If not balanced the cocktail can taste like medicine.
For your mint liqueur, be careful not to let the mint steep too long or the bitterness of the leaves will leech out into the vodka. Also the quality of the vodka is key. A cheap vodka will yield a cheap tasting liqueur. I have given up on tying to make my own. When purchasing price does make a difference. I have found the cheaper the sweeter and more artificial the flavour.
