Very good and balanced cocktail, especially when made with quality bourbon and sweet vermouth. Bourbon purists will cringe at mixing their holy water with anything but ice, but this is a great drink to win over those who might find the base spirit a little too overpowering.
By my count, this is at least my third time making this. Didn't think much of it prior to this most recent try. Used Antica Torino for the vermouth, as well as lowered the bourbon (this time, Four Roses) from 45 to 40 ml. All of a sudden, near perfection! Wow! (27 Feb 2022, 7:40a)
I bumped up the Luxardo just a smidge and it took enough of the bite out of the cynar without masking it completely. This will be a regular cocktail for me!
Reading your comment prompted me to give a good long stir as I am not keen on cloying drinks. I found it nicely balanced and not too cloying. As an experiment, I contrasted this after drinking one half with then adding a 2" ice sphere; maybe too much dilution after a long stir! Next time "normal" stir and try on rocks to see if dilution to cloyedness better.
I might test it again, only this time with a bar spoon of Luxardo Maraschino.
