On a whim, we did a side by side tasting. Starting with an Infantado dry White Port and then progressing on a 'sumptuousness' scale from a Blandy's rainwater medium dry Madeira, through a Pellegrino semi-secco Marsala to a Grosperrin Pineau des Charentes. For us, the original recipe, as specified, was the most subtly elegant. As a fruitier alternative, we also really enjoyed the Pineau version. But you be the judge.
This is a classic, especially in hot weather! A delicious and long low abv drink over ice - very refreshing. Slightly sweet, not cloying - a bit like a mildly sweet apple juice. Great to serve summertime dinner guests!
I know what you mean by the mildly sweet apple juice flavour, but the drink still has enough 'cocktail character'. I would drink this if I wanted something light on a hot day
