Amaro Lucano was created in 1894 by Pasquale Vena in the backroom of his biscuit bakery, in small town of Pisticci in the province of Matera in Basilicata...
From what I’m able to ascertain on a search, Amaro Averna is the ‘closest’ substitute for Lucano with the caveat that it does add more of a cola note. Others mentioned were Nonino and Montenegro but Averna was stated as the closest.
Just opened a bottle of Lucano, purchased (for a song) here in Naples. Quaffing it over ice, as I have no other ingredients to play with. We might invest in some soda (and maybe an orange for a slice), but that'll be it I reckon. Absolutely loving it.
