Have you tried Cynar 70? It's definitely more assertive when mixed with other stronger flavors. Great right out of the the bottle also.
We made it with Cynar 70 (we only use the 70 because it is stronger and more bitter) and Four Square Sovereignty rum and it was intense and cigar-y as billed, but interesting enough for a non-smoker to enjoy.
