This Russian vodka is named after General Mikhail T. Kalashnikov, a man better known for designing the AK-47 gun for which he was awarded The Order of Lenin. AK-47 actually stands for 'Automatic gun of Kalashnikov 1947', the year referring to when the weapon was adopted by the Russian army.

Kalashnikov vodka is triple distilled and filtered through birch charcoal and is made from Russian grain in St Petersburg using water drawn from nearby Lake Ladoga. The vodka is slightly sweetened and flavoured with white honey and lime blossom.

Kalashnikov is bottled at 41% alc. /vol., one percent stronger than the more usual 40%. Apparently, this was devised to prevent fake vodka being supplied to troops. The extra percent was not disclosed until recently. Thus any fake vodka would be made at 40% so the army quality control testers only had to test the alcoholic strength to determine if is was genuine. Thus Kalashnikov vodka is labelled 'ApMeЙCKaЯ KpeΠOCTb', meaning 'Military Strength' and pronounced 'Armenskaya Krepost'.

Sadly all those references to guns in the brands marketing led it to fall foul of the UK's Portman Group with the industry watchdog ordering its removal from British sale early in 2005.
